Conjunctions and Connectives
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
και (kai) – "and": Εγώ και εσύ (You and I).
ή (i) – "or": Θέλεις καφέ ή τσάι; (Do you want coffee or tea?).
αλλά (alla) – "but": Θέλω να πάω, αλλά δεν μπορώ (I want to go, but I can’t).
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses, which cannot stand alone as complete sentences. These are used to explain time, reason, condition, or purpose. Common subordinating conjunctions in Greek include:
ότι (óti) – "that": Ξέρω ότι έχεις δίκιο (I know that you are right).
αν (an) – "if": Αν έρθεις, θα σε δω (If you come, I will see you).
γιατί (giatí) – "because": Δεν πήγα γιατί έβρεχε (I didn’t go because it was raining).
όταν (ótan) – "when": Όταν φτάσεις, τηλεφώνησέ μου (When you arrive, call me).
3. Correlative Conjunctions
These conjunctions are used in pairs to show relationships between different ideas, similar to "both...and" or "either...or" in English. Common examples include:
όχι μόνο... αλλά και (óchi móno... allá kai) – "not only... but also": Όχι μόνο διάβασε, αλλά και έγραψε (Not only did he read, but he also wrote).
είτε... είτε (íte... íte) – "either... or": Είτε πάω είτε μείνω, το ίδιο είναι (Whether I go or stay, it’s the same).
4. Temporal Conjunctions
Temporal conjunctions help connect events in time. Examples include:
πριν (prin) – "before": Πριν φύγεις, κλείσε την πόρτα (Before you leave, close the door).
αφού (afóu) – "after": Αφού φάμε, θα πάμε βόλτα (After we eat, we will go for a walk).
5. Contrastive Conjunctions
These conjunctions are used to express contrast between ideas, such as "but" or "however" in English.
ενώ (enó) – "while" or "whereas": Εγώ διαβάζω, ενώ αυτός κοιμάται (I am reading, whereas he is sleeping).
παρόλο που (parólo pou) – "even though": Πήγε βόλτα, παρόλο που έβρεχε (He went for a walk, even though it was raining).
