Demonstrative Pronouns in French

In French, demonstrative pronouns are used to replace or refer to a noun or noun phrase that has already been mentioned. They agree in gender and number with the noun they represent.

The French demonstrative pronouns are:

  • Singular:

    • Masculine: celui (this one, that one)
    • Feminine: celle (this one, that one)
  • Plural:

    • Masculine: ceux (these, those)
    • Feminine: celles (these, those)

These pronouns can be used alone or with a preposition, such as "de" or "à".

Examples:

  • Quel livre veux-tu ? Celui-ci ou celui-là ? (Which book do you want? This one or that one?)
  • J'aime ces fleurs, mais je préfère celles-là. (I like these flowers, but I prefer those ones.)
  • Les étudiants ont réussi l'examen, mais ceux de la classe B ont eu de meilleurs résultats. (The students passed the exam, but those from class B had better results.)

It's important to note that the demonstrative pronouns "ce" and "cet" (this, that) are used as determiners before nouns, not as pronouns by themselves.
