Regular Verb Conjugations

Italian verbs are divided into three main groups based on their infinitive endings:

  1. -are verbs: Most common group
  2. -ere verbs: Second most common
  3. -ire verbs: Least common

To conjugate regular verbs, remove the infinitive ending and add the appropriate ending for each person:

Person -are -ere -ire
io -o -o -o
tu -i -i -i
lui/lei/Lei -a -e -e
noi -iamo -iamo -iamo
voi -ate -ete -ite
loro -ano -ono -ono

Examples:

  • parlare (to speak): parlo, parli, parla, parliamo, parlate, parlano
  • credere (to believe): credo, credi, crede, crediamo, credete, credono
  • dormire (to sleep): dormo, dormi, dorme, dormiamo, dormite, dormono

Irregular Verbs

Some common irregular verbs in the present tense include:

  • essere (to be): sono, sei, รจ, siamo, siete, sono
  • avere (to have): ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno
  • fare (to do/make): faccio, fai, fa, facciamo, fate, fanno
  • andare (to go): vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno

Special -ire Verbs

A group of -ire verbs adds -isc- to some conjugations:

Person Example: finire (to finish)
io finisco
tu finisci
lui/lei/Lei finisce
noi finiamo
voi finite
loro finiscono

Other verbs following this pattern include capire, preferire, and pulire.
