Types of Conjunctions in Italian

Coordinating Conjunctions

  • E (and): Connects words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance
  • O (or): Presents alternatives
  • Ma (but): Expresses contrast or opposition
  • Però (however): Similar to "ma," but often used at the end of a clause
  • Quindi (therefore): Indicates a conclusion or result
  • Oppure (or else): Offers another alternative

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • Che (that): Introduces dependent clauses
  • Perché (because): Expresses reason or cause
  • Quando (when): Indicates time
  • Se (if): Introduces conditional clauses
  • Mentre (while): Expresses simultaneous actions
  • Benché (although): Introduces concessive clauses

Usage and Examples

Coordinating conjunctions join elements of equal grammatical importance:

  • Mangio pasta e bevo vino. (I eat pasta and drink wine.)
  • Vuoi caffè o tè? (Do you want coffee or tea?)

Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses:

  • Penso che sia una buona idea. (I think that it's a good idea.)
  • Vado a casa perché sono stanco. (I'm going home because I'm tired.)

Compound Conjunctions

Italian also uses compound conjunctions:

  • Sia...sia (both...and): Sia Marco sia Giulia vengono alla festa.
  • Né...né (neither...nor): Non bevo né caffè né tè.
