Types of Conjunctions in Italian
Coordinating Conjunctions
- E (and): Connects words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance
- O (or): Presents alternatives
- Ma (but): Expresses contrast or opposition
- Però (however): Similar to "ma," but often used at the end of a clause
- Quindi (therefore): Indicates a conclusion or result
- Oppure (or else): Offers another alternative
Subordinating Conjunctions
- Che (that): Introduces dependent clauses
- Perché (because): Expresses reason or cause
- Quando (when): Indicates time
- Se (if): Introduces conditional clauses
- Mentre (while): Expresses simultaneous actions
- Benché (although): Introduces concessive clauses
Usage and Examples
Coordinating conjunctions join elements of equal grammatical importance:
- Mangio pasta e bevo vino. (I eat pasta and drink wine.)
- Vuoi caffè o tè? (Do you want coffee or tea?)
Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses:
- Penso che sia una buona idea. (I think that it's a good idea.)
- Vado a casa perché sono stanco. (I'm going home because I'm tired.)
Compound Conjunctions
Italian also uses compound conjunctions:
- Sia...sia (both...and): Sia Marco sia Giulia vengono alla festa.
- Né...né (neither...nor): Non bevo né caffè né tè.
