Types of Conjunctions in Polish

Polish conjunctions (spójniki) are divided into two main categories:

  1. Coordinating conjunctions (spójniki współrzędne)
  2. Subordinating conjunctions (spójniki podrzędne)

Coordinating Conjunctions

These connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance:

  • i (and)
  • ale (but)
  • lub / albo (or)
  • oraz (and, as well as)
  • więc (so, therefore)

Subordinating Conjunctions

These introduce dependent clauses:

  • że (that)
  • aby / żeby (in order to)
  • jeśli / jeżeli (if)
  • ponieważ (because)
  • kiedy (when)

Usage and Grammar

  • Polish conjunctions do not change form based on case or gender.
  • Some conjunctions can change the aspect of the verb in the clause they introduce.
  • Certain conjunctions require specific verb moods, such as the conditional or subjunctive.

Common Mistakes

  • Non-native speakers often confuse i (and) with a (and, but), which is used to contrast or compare.
  • The conjunction że is frequently overused in translations from English, where Polish would use a different construction.
