Types of Interrogative Pronouns

Polish uses several interrogative pronouns to ask questions:

  • Kto (who): Used for asking about people
  • Co (what): Used for asking about things or actions
  • Który/która/które (which): Used to ask about a specific item from a group
  • Czyj/czyja/czyje (whose): Used to inquire about possession
  • Jaki/jaka/jakie (what kind of): Used to ask about qualities or characteristics

Declension

Polish interrogative pronouns decline according to case, gender, and number:

  1. Kto and co decline for case only
  2. Który, czyj, and jaki decline for case, gender, and number

Usage in Sentences

  • Kto to jest? (Who is this?)
  • Co robisz? (What are you doing?)
  • Którą książkę wybrałeś? (Which book did you choose?)
  • Czyj to samochód? (Whose car is this?)
  • Jaki jest twój ulubiony kolor? (What is your favorite color?)

Compound Forms

Polish also uses compound forms of interrogative pronouns:

  • Dlaczego (why): Combines dla (for) and czego (what)
  • Po co (what for): Combines po (after) and co (what)

These compound forms add nuance to questions and help create more specific inquiries.
