Grammatical Genders in Serbian

Serbian has three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. These genders affect nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and past-tense verbs.

  1. Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant (e.g., čovek - man, sto - table). Adjectives describing them end in -i (e.g., veliki sto - big table).

  2. Feminine nouns typically end in -a (e.g., žena - woman, knjiga - book). Adjectives take the ending -a (e.g., velika knjiga - big book).

  3. Neuter nouns end in -o or -e (e.g., dete - child, more - sea), with adjectives ending in -o (e.g., veliko more - big sea).

In the past tense, verbs change endings based on the subject’s gender:

  • Masculine: On je radio. (He worked)
  • Feminine: Ona je radila. (She worked)
  • Neuter: Dete je radilo. (The child worked)

Pronouns also reflect gender: on (he), ona (she), and ono (it).
