The Future Tense
To form the future tense in Serbian, you need two parts: the auxiliary verb "hteti" (to want) and the main verb in its infinitive form. The auxiliary verb "hteti" is conjugated according to the subject, and it helps indicate that the action will occur in the future.
Conjugation of "hteti"
First, let's see how "hteti" is conjugated:
- Ja ću (I will)
- Ti ćeš (You will - singular)
- On/Ona/Ono će (He/She/It will)
- Mi ćemo (We will)
- Vi ćete (You will - plural/formal)
- Oni/One/Ona će (They will)
Using the Main Verb
After the conjugated form of "hteti," you add the main verb in its infinitive form. Here's a simple example with the verb "raditi" (to work):
- Ja ću raditi (I will work)
- Ti ćeš raditi (You will work)
- On/Ona/Ono će raditi (He/She/It will work)
- Mi ćemo raditi (We will work)
- Vi ćete raditi (You will work - plural/formal)
- Oni/One/Ona će raditi (They will work)
Examples in Sentences
- Ja ću učiti sutra. (I will study tomorrow.)
- Ona će pisati pismo. (She will write a letter.)
- Mi ćemo igrati fudbal. (We will play football.)
Important Notes
- Negation: To form the negative future tense, place "ne" before the auxiliary verb. For example, "Ja neću raditi" means "I will not work."
- Word Order: In Serbian, the auxiliary verb "ću" can sometimes be placed after the main verb for emphasis, especially in spoken language. For example, "Raditi ću sutra" means the same as "Ja ću raditi sutra."
