Turkish Imperative Mood
The imperative mood in Turkish is used to give commands, make requests, or offer suggestions. It is relatively simple to form but has some unique characteristics:
Basic Formation
For singular (informal) commands, use the verb stem:
Gel!(Come!)Yap!(Do it!)
For plural or formal commands, add
-in/-ın/-un/-ünto the verb stem:Gelin!(Come! - plural/formal)Yapın!(Do it! - plural/formal)
Negative Imperative
Add
-me/-mato the verb stem for singular:Gelme!(Don't come!)
Add
-meyin/-mayınfor plural/formal:Gelmeyin!(Don't come! - plural/formal)
Polite Imperative
- Use the optative mood with
-eyim/-ayımfor a more polite request:Geleyim mi?(Shall I come?)
Third-Person Imperative
Add
-sin/-sın/-sun/-sünfor singular:Gelsin!(Let him/her come!)
Add
-sinler/-sınlar/-sunlar/-sünlerfor plural:Gelsinler!(Let them come!)
Irregular Verbs
Some common verbs have irregular imperative forms:
