Turkish Imperative Mood

The imperative mood in Turkish is used to give commands, make requests, or offer suggestions. It is relatively simple to form but has some unique characteristics:

Basic Formation

  • For singular (informal) commands, use the verb stem:

    • Gel! (Come!)
    • Yap! (Do it!)
  • For plural or formal commands, add -in/-ın/-un/-ün to the verb stem:

    • Gelin! (Come! - plural/formal)
    • Yapın! (Do it! - plural/formal)

Negative Imperative

  • Add -me/-ma to the verb stem for singular:

    • Gelme! (Don't come!)
  • Add -meyin/-mayın for plural/formal:

    • Gelmeyin! (Don't come! - plural/formal)

Polite Imperative

  • Use the optative mood with -eyim/-ayım for a more polite request:
    • Geleyim mi? (Shall I come?)

Third-Person Imperative

  • Add -sin/-sın/-sun/-sün for singular:

    • Gelsin! (Let him/her come!)
  • Add -sinler/-sınlar/-sunlar/-sünler for plural:

    • Gelsinler! (Let them come!)

Irregular Verbs

Some common verbs have irregular imperative forms:

  • Gitmek (to go): Git! (singular), Gidin! (plural/formal)
  • Demek (to say): De! (singular), Deyin! (plural/formal)
