Forming the Future Tense

The Turkish future tense is formed by adding the suffix "-ecek" or "-acak" to the verb stem. The choice between these suffixes depends on vowel harmony:

  • Use "-ecek" after e, i, ö, ü
  • Use "-acak" after a, ı, o, u

For example:

  • gelmek (to come) → gelecek
  • yapmak (to do) → yapacak

Personal Endings

After adding the future tense suffix, personal endings are attached:

  • Ben: -(y)im/-ım
  • Sen: -sin
  • O: - (no ending)
  • Biz: -(y)iz/-ız
  • Siz: -siniz
  • Onlar: -ler/-lar

Example: gelmek (to come)

  • Ben geleceğim
  • Sen geleceksin
  • O gelecek
  • Biz geleceğiz
  • Siz geleceksiniz
  • Onlar gelecekler

Negative Form

To form the negative, add "-me/-ma" before the future tense suffix:

  • gelmek → gelmeyecek
  • yapmak → yapmayacak

Question Form

To form questions, add the particle "mi" after the verb and before the personal ending:

  • Gelecek misin? (Will you come?)
  • Yapacak mıyız? (Will we do it?)

Time Expressions

Common time expressions used with the future tense include:

  • yarın (tomorrow)
  • gelecek hafta (next week)
  • gelecek ay (next month)
  • gelecek yıl (next year)
