The Turkish Present Continuous Tense expresses actions happening at the moment of speaking or around the present time. It is formed by adding the suffix "-yor" to the verb stem, followed by personal endings.
Conjugation Pattern
- I am (verb)-ing: -(i)yorum
- You are (verb)-ing: -(i)yorsun
- He/She/It is (verb)-ing: -(i)yor
- We are (verb)-ing: -(i)yoruz
- You (plural) are (verb)-ing: -(i)yorsunuz
- They are (verb)-ing: -(i)yorlar
Vowel Harmony
The suffix "-yor" follows vowel harmony rules. The connecting vowel (i) changes to ı, i, u, or ü depending on the last vowel of the verb stem.
Examples
- Gelmek (to come): Geliyorum (I am coming)
- Yapmak (to do): Yapıyorsun (You are doing)
- Okumak (to read): Okuyor (He/She/It is reading)
- Gitmek (to go): Gidiyoruz (We are going)
Negative Form
To form the negative, add "-m(ı/i/u/ü)yor" instead of "-yor":
- Gelmiyorum (I am not coming)
- Yapmıyorsun (You are not doing)
Question Form
For questions, add the question particle "mu/mı/mü/mi" after the verb:
- Geliyor musun? (Are you coming?)
- Yapıyor muyuz? (Are we doing?)
